Art and About: Setting Good Goals
Posted by Dan Joyce on
Most people on social media tell me I should let go of my toxic family and focus on my success as an artist. While creative success isn’t easy, I’ve set some clear plans for the coming year that should help me move forward. If I commit to moving into a shelter for around three months, I’ll be able to save enough money to attend both WonderCon and Comic-Con San Diego and sell my graphic noveles in a Small Press booth. These conventions are huge opportunities for any artist—not only to break even financially but to network and connect with other...
Who is the Unlikely Prophet?
Posted by Dan Joyce on
In a world that often looks to the expected places for wisdom—scholars, leaders, and religious figures—the Unlikely Prophet series challenges the norm by presenting a prophet whose insights come from unexpected origins. The series, featured on UnlikelyProphet.net, dives into the life and revelations of a figure who defies traditional expectations of what it means to be a prophet. The Unlikely Prophet doesn’t wear the robes of a religious leader or preach from a pulpit. Instead, they embody the notion that profound truths can come from anywhere, often from the places society least expects. This series combines elements of philosophy, spirituality,...

In this collection, each drawing is created on canvas, adding texture and...
My Smoker’s Journal: Why Don’t I Want to Smoke?
Posted by Dan Joyce on
The question I keep coming back to is this: why don’t I want to smoke? But maybe the real question should be, why do I want to smoke in the first place? And if I genuinely want to stop, it becomes, why don’t I smoke anymore? Oddly, smoking has been something I’ve falsely accepted for a long time. You know the reasoning—"It’s too hard to quit, so why bother?" I even quit once for eight years through a cessation program. But the moment I left that program, I started again. One cigarette, and I was right back where I started,...
Basic Boundaries: Saying Yes to Yes
Posted by Dan Joyce on
When I first arrived at this facility, I was angry. I had a rough encounter with the person who would become my caseworker. "I don’t want tough love or your therapy," I told her, shutting her down from the start. Things didn’t get better when another patient wanted to fight me, and I felt the caseworker didn’t handle it well. Still, she has been helping me with housing, and I’ve rejected every offer she’s made, even though she was only trying to help. In my mind, I wasn't ready to trust her. But something changed in group therapy recently, where...
