My Smoker’s Journal – The Quiet Victory of Another Smoke-Free Day

Posted by Dan Joyce on

Another day smoke free. Not with fireworks. Not with a parade marching down Harbor Boulevard throwing confetti at my lungs. Just quiet. Steady. Real. Almost a week again. I say “again” like it’s a failure. Like the counter reset means something was lost. But that’s not true. Nothing was lost. Those days still exist. They’re built into me now, like bricks in a house that doesn’t fall down just because you stumbled on the front steps. I know I sound negative sometimes when I talk about quitting. There’s a tone in there, like I don’t quite trust it yet. Like...

My Smoker’s Journal – The Myth of Starting Over (and Why Progress Still Counts)

Posted by Dan Joyce on

At the pet hospital with Whiskey Kitty to take care of her worms and fleas, I told the veterinarian I had seven days smoke-free. Clean. Clear. A small but meaningful victory. The kind you hold onto like a warm cup of coffee on a cold morning. But then came the correction. I also told him I recently had four months. “Well… you’ve had a few bouts of that,” he said. “So it’s seven days.” And just like that, the scoreboard reset. Back to zero.Back to the starting line.Back to that mental space where the mountain suddenly looks taller than it...

My Smoker’s Journal – The Last Stand of a Fading Habit

Posted by Dan Joyce on

There was a time when cigarettes strutted around like celebrities. They had mascots. They had cowboys. They had camels with more swagger than a Vegas lounge singer. They weren’t just a habit, they were a whole personality wrapped in a cloud of smoke. Now? They’re like that washed-up rock band still trying to sell tickets at a county fair. So when someone says the tobacco companies are manipulating me, I pause for a second. Not because it’s completely false, but because it feels… outdated. Like blaming Blockbuster for your Netflix binge. Let’s look at the battlefield here in California. Joe...

Cat Communication with Whiskey Kitty – The Karate Kitten

Posted by Dan Joyce on

The last few days, something’s been off in the Kingdom of Whiskey Kitty. Not dramatically. Not alarms and sirens. Just… quiet. Too quiet. She’s been sleepy. Low energy. Not her usual fast-and-curious self. This is the same cat who treats the house like an Olympic training facility, launching from couch to chair to invisible ninja platforms only she can see. Now she’s resting more, moving slower, like the volume knob on her spirit got turned down a few clicks. Mom thinks it’s the heat. That makes sense. We’ve all felt like wilted houseplants lately. But even with the air conditioning...

Cat Communication with Whiskey Kitty – The Queen of Chaos and the Art of Feline Curiosity

Posted by Dan Joyce on

It’s no secret Whiskey Kitty is a tiny, fur-covered explorer with the soul of an acrobat and the curiosity of a scientist who’s had way too much coffee. She walks across the laundry hamper like it’s a tightrope over Niagara Falls, only to plummet inside as if that was the plan all along. She opens bathroom cabinets like she’s searching for ancient scrolls, tosses towels to the floor as if decluttering is her personal mission, and then perches on the top shelf like a sphinx guarding the secrets of the universe. And don’t even get me started on her fascination...
