After trying to discuss mental health awareness three times with Assemblywoman Sharon Quirk-Silva, I finally had enough. Each time I reached out, hoping for a meaningful conversation, I was met with indifference. Frustrated, I decided to make a statement by publicly asking to have my name removed from her petition. The very next day, Sharon arranged to meet me for lunch. But let's be clear, there was no lunch. We didn’t eat, and she wouldn’t even buy me a hamburger from the place next door.
Instead, she launched into a tirade about bills and laws that were way over my head, speaking in a hostile tone that left me more confused than informed. I had originally thought she was on our side, someone who would advocate for us. But after that conversation, I looked up the laws she was talking about. To my horror, I found out that some of them, like Laura’s Law, were not helpful at all. In fact, they were harmful. Laura’s Law can allow anyone to have you psychologically evaluated and even forced into treatment without your consent. That’s a terrifying thought for anyone, especially for those of us already struggling with mental health issues.
During our conversation, Sharon also mentioned her brother, saying she had written him off as hopeless. And when he died, she used his death as part of her political campaign. I was shocked. How can someone be so heartless? How can a person who is supposed to represent and care for her constituents be so cold, even towards her own family?
We can't afford to have politicians like Sharon Quirk-Silva in office—people who lack the compassion and understanding needed to truly help those in need. It's time to vote her out or, at the very least, demand that she starts showing some empathy. And Sharon, if you're reading this, the next time you offer to meet someone for lunch, at least buy them a hamburger. I’m hungry, and I’m still waiting.
