When I was living in Fullerton, I decided to treat myself to lunch at a local landmark, Nick's Burgers. Known for its delicious burgers at prices that beat DoorDash, it seemed like the perfect choice for a meal. But what was supposed to be a simple lunch turned into an unexpected and disappointing encounter.
Not wanting caffeine that day, I approached the cashier and asked if I could fill my cup with water instead of soda. It seemed like a reasonable request, but what followed left a bitter taste in my mouth—far worse than any overcooked burger could.
As I filled my cup, a large, muscular cook stormed over and muscled me away from the soda fountain, asserting that I couldn't fill my cup with water. His attitude was aggressive, making it clear I was no longer welcome. Moments later, he handed me my burger in a bag with no condiments, escorted me out of the building, and pointed to a sign stating that they reserve the right to refuse service to anyone.
This sign, backed by a controversial law originating from the Jim Crow era, has now been repurposed to target the homeless community in Fullerton. It's a thinly veiled tool of discrimination, used to exclude and marginalize those who don't meet a certain standard of appearance. Ironically, I wasn't even homeless—I had simply neglected to trim my beard.
This experience wasn't just about a burger; it was a stark reminder of how discrimination is still alive and well in our communities, hidden behind outdated laws and prejudices. Businesses like Nick's Burgers should be places where everyone is welcome, regardless of how they look or what they can afford. Instead, they've chosen to wield this "right to refuse service" as a weapon of exclusion.
That's why I'm calling on the community to boycott Nick's Burgers in Fullerton. Let's send a message that discrimination, in any form, has no place in our town. It's time we stand up against these outdated practices and demand respect and fairness for everyone—whether you're homeless or just sporting a bit of extra facial hair.
