Today wasn’t about cravings for cigarettes — today was about something trickier: the desire to smoke marijuana instead. I asked myself the big question… Does this count as a slip? For me, the answer is yes.
I made a promise to family and friends that I would go clean from all of it. Tobacco, alcohol, drugs — the whole catalog of self-medication. I didn’t promise to quit “most things.” I promised to quit everything. That matters. If I broke that promise, even “just one puff,” the dishonesty itself would be the relapse. Not the substance. Not the high. The dishonesty.
But this is 2025 and we live in California. Cannabis is everywhere. In boarding homes. Group homes. Sober livings of all places. There are dispensaries with neon signs right next door to your favorite coffee shop. And they even deliver like Domino’s. Convenience store weed — we’ve officially arrived in the future.
The trap is easy to fall into. Weed isn’t as addictive as cigarettes. It doesn’t claw at you every morning in a panic. It doesn’t tear holes in your lungs in the same way. That little voice in my head whispers, “What’s the harm? It’s natural. It’s calmer. It’s not three packs a day.” But addiction isn’t measured only in physical damage. It’s measured in patterns, dependence, lying to yourself or others, and that sneaky bargain with your own conscience.
Today I sat in the car while Mom went shopping. The dispensary was right there. I had one of those moments where I could almost feel the smoke before I smoked it. And I’ll be honest: it wasn’t just the weed. I wanted a cigarette too. A two-for-one slip. That’s how addiction tempts you. It never offers just one little compromise. It offers a chain reaction.
But I didn’t go in. I didn’t light up. I didn’t hit a vape pen. I sat with the craving and we drove away.
Maybe that doesn’t sound heroic to anyone else. But if you’ve ever fought addiction, you know those quiet invisible battles sometimes mean everything.
Whatever doesn’t harm me only makes me stronger — cigarettes or cannabis.
