My Smoker’s Journal – Day 12 – Good Morning, Nicotine Fits

Posted by Dan Joyce on

There’s no doubt about it—the cravings are the worst in the morning. The minute I wake up, they hit me like an old, unwelcome friend at the door. Sometimes I even oversleep, hoping to snooze them away. Of course, they’re still there when I open my eyes, whispering that all it takes is a short walk to the 7-Eleven for a pack of cigarettes and I’m right back where I started.

Two things I’ve noticed:

  1. Now that I’ve quit, smoking almost feels too easy to quit again—like I could just pick up where I left off. But I know that’s a lie addiction tells.

  2. I’ve had to cut back on going out to places I enjoy—like coffeehouses or outdoor cafés—because that’s where the temptation lives. It’s strange how many of our routines are built around bad habits.

Still, for all my whining, I’m winning this battle one day at a time. I even find myself using a few of the 12-step tricks I picked up over the years, as much as I used to roll my eyes at them—like reminding myself that one puff is a relapse.

And here’s what’s keeping me going: the promise of reward. My motivation to save up and buy a booth at the book fair event paid off, and it feels like a victory every bit as satisfying as lighting up once did. I got this.
