Demand Disabled Death Reports from Telecare: Uncovering the Dark Side of Mental Health Care

Posted by Dan Joyce on

Telecare is quick to highlight their success stories. They'll tell you about the clients who "got better," who "moved on," who now supposedly thrive thanks to their interventions. They encourage their clients to contact local government officials, share these tales of triumph, and help paint a rosy picture of their services. But what about the other side of the story? What about the failures? What about those who didn't make it? How many have died under their watch?

This is the question we must demand an answer to. Telecare, like many organizations involved in mental health care, is all too eager to parade their successes but remains suspiciously silent about their failures. The reality is that mental health care is fraught with challenges, and not every client emerges on the other side better off. Some don't emerge at all. But do they keep track? Do they have records of how many clients have died while under their care? And if they do, why aren't they sharing them?

This issue isn't unique to Telecare. Look at Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) as an example. AA is a program with a reported success rate of just 10%—by their own statistics. Yet, despite this dismal success rate, there are no official reports of wrongful deaths. We don't hear about the people who died in their programs, who may have been pushed too hard, too fast, or who fell through the cracks entirely.

Why is it that these organizations can operate without accountability? Why is it that they aren't required to report their failures, especially when those failures result in death? The lives of the disabled, the mentally ill, the vulnerable—these lives matter. Their deaths matter. And it is time we started demanding transparency from the organizations that are supposed to be helping them.

We need statistics and reports. We need to know how many people have died under Telecare's care. We need to know what went wrong in those cases and what, if anything, is being done to prevent it from happening again. We need to hold these organizations accountable for their actions—or inactions. The first step is demanding that they come clean about their failures, just as readily as they share their successes.

If you're involved in a Telecare program or know someone who is, demand these reports. Ask the tough questions. Don’t settle for vague assurances or empty promises. The truth is too important to be ignored, and too many lives have been lost already. It’s time for Telecare to stop hiding behind success stories and start facing the reality of the deaths under their care.

It's not just about accountability—it's about justice for those who didn't make it. It's about ensuring that their deaths aren't in vain and that future clients receive the care and protection they deserve. Let's start demanding answers and make sure these organizations are held to the highest standards of care and responsibility.
