Bible Talk with Dan – The Soul Is Not a Muscle: It’s a Purity and a Taintedness

Posted by Dan Joyce on

The soul is a fascinating concept. It’s not a muscle you can flex or grow in the gym of life. It’s a purity that can be tainted, a core essence that is both divine and vulnerable. How much you allow it to be shaped, purified, or tainted depends on what you endure and choose.

The Bible provides a deep well of wisdom about the soul, particularly in the King James Version (KJV), where it often describes the soul as something precious, eternal, and easily influenced by good and evil. Let’s explore what the KJV says about the nature of the soul.

The Soul Is Pure at Creation

We are reminded in the book of Genesis that man’s soul is a direct creation of God, breathed into him at the beginning:

"And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul." (Genesis 2:7 KJV)

This shows that our soul is a divine gift, pure and without blemish when we come into existence. It’s not like a muscle we develop over time; it’s a purity we are entrusted with from the start.

The Soul Can Be Tainted by Sin

Just as we can feel the weight of our physical sins, so too is the soul vulnerable to corruption. This tainting of the soul is not just a result of action but also of intention. In Mark, Jesus warns us about what truly defiles:

"For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness: All these evil things come from within, and defile the man." (Mark 7:21-23 KJV)

It’s clear that the soul can become tainted by what we allow inside our hearts and minds. We may not always control what we face in life, but how we react and what we harbor within us affects our soul deeply.

The Soul’s Struggle for Purity

We endure many trials in life, and these can either strengthen the purity of our soul or taint it further. How much we choose to endure, and how we respond to adversity, shapes the condition of our soul. As Proverbs tells us:

"The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat." (Proverbs 13:4 KJV)

This verse speaks not of physical riches but of the inner richness of the soul that comes through diligence and perseverance. It shows us that the purity of the soul is something to strive for, despite the hardships we may face.

Healing the Tainted Soul

What happens when we realize our soul is tainted? Thankfully, the Bible speaks to the power of redemption. The purity of the soul can be restored through faith and forgiveness. In the Psalms, David calls out to God to heal his soul:

"He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake." (Psalm 23:3 KJV)

God offers a path to purification, no matter how much taintedness we’ve endured. Through repentance, we can find that restoration and regain the purity of our soul.

Endurance and the Soul’s Journey

It’s up to each of us how much we choose to endure in life. Endurance is not just about physical strength; it’s about spiritual resilience. The Apostle Paul reminds us of this in Romans:

"But we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; And patience, experience; and experience, hope." (Romans 5:3-4 KJV)

Enduring life’s hardships with faith strengthens our soul and purifies it through the process.

Conclusion

The soul is not a muscle we can build through effort alone. It is a purity that can be tainted by the evils of this world and our own inner thoughts. However, through faith, repentance, and endurance, we can strive to maintain and restore the purity of our soul. How much we endure and what we choose to do with the challenges we face is in our hands.

Ultimately, the soul is a reflection of our choices—whether we allow it to remain pure or let it be tainted by the world. How much are you willing to endure to keep your soul pure?
