Bax Baxter - Cool or Clone?

Posted by Dan Joyce on

In the dynamic and often contentious world of local art scenes, figures like Stephan Baxter emerge as influential gatekeepers, shaping the cultural landscape with their decisions. Known for his punk rock liberal persona, Baxter holds considerable sway in Fullerton and Santa Ana, guiding the destinies of artists and their opportunities to exhibit. But what truly defines his role? Is he a "cool" visionary, bravely steering the local art world into new territories, or merely a "clone," adhering to well-worn paths dictated by commercial interests and personal prejudices?

Stephan Baxter, who once positioned himself as a critic of local law enforcement in the infamous Kelly Thomas case, ironically employs the very same police force to enforce his will in the art market. This contradictory behavior is exemplified in my personal experience, where my mental illness diagnosis became a barrier, influenced by Baxter's decisions. He orchestrated my removal from the Art Colony in Fullerton, extending this exclusion to Santa Ana by advising galleries and coffeehouses to shun my work, effectively blacklisting me based on my health rather than my art’s merit.

This gatekeeping raises significant questions about inclusivity and ethics in the art world, particularly in an era that purportedly values mental health awareness and diversity. Baxter’s approach reflects a troubling trend in art communities where access and opportunity are often filtered through biases that mirror broader societal stigmas against mental health. It’s a stark contradiction in an industry that prides itself on expression and empathy.

The role of an art promoter should ideally be to elevate a diverse range of cultural expressions, celebrating the full spectrum of community voices. The art world needs leaders who challenge the status quo, promoting inclusivity and representation for all artists, irrespective of their personal backgrounds or challenges.

In conclusion, whether Baxter is seen as "cool" or a "clone" depends on one’s view of what the art world ought to embody. Should it be an exclusive domain for a select few, curated by gatekeepers like Baxter, or a vibrant, inclusive community where every artist has a voice? For those of us marginalized by such gatekeeping, the need is clear. The art world demands courageous leaders who will tear down barriers and champion the rights of all artists, not just those who fit within narrow, conventional bounds.
