In the ongoing debate over the legitimacy of AI-generated art, one thing is clear: it’s time to redefine our understanding of art in the digital age. Many, if not most, oppose AI art as "real" art. But I argue that AI is just another tool—much like the camera or the paintbrush. As an artist who has been selling computer prints since 1996 and holds multiple degrees in art, I find it disheartening to see such resistance to a new form of creative expression.
With three college degrees, two of which are in art, and having studied in Florence, Italy, I’ve immersed myself in the rich history and evolution of art. I’ve earned A’s in art history across five significant periods, and I still actively run my own website and blog to share my artistic journey. My experience has shown me that the essence of art is not confined to specific mediums or methods; it lies in the intention and creativity behind the work.
The 20th century saw us destroy the traditional definitions of art by constantly redefining it. Movements came and went, each claiming to possess the true understanding of what art should be. Yet here we stand, at a pivotal moment—what I like to call a postmodern renaissance. Art is resurrecting, and the emergence of AI as a tool for creation is merely a reflection of that evolution.
AI provides us with a unique opportunity to explore new realms of creativity. It enables artists to experiment and innovate in ways we never imagined possible. When I use AI in my creative process, I’m not relinquishing my artistic voice; I’m enhancing it. Just as the camera revolutionized how we capture the world, AI offers a new canvas for our imagination.
So, to those who oppose AI art and wish to dictate the boundaries of what art can be, I say this: you don’t get to tell me what art is. Art is about exploration, expression, and pushing boundaries. It is a reflection of our time, and in this era, technology is a vital part of that conversation.
As we navigate this new landscape, let’s embrace the possibilities that AI offers. Enjoy the show, and remember that art, in all its forms—be it traditional or digital—is ultimately about the creative spirit that fuels it. Let’s celebrate the resurgence of art in this postmodern age, where the only limit is our imagination.
