Art and About: 10 Days Until I Find Out If My Movie Will Be Accepted for The Sunset Film Festival
by Dan Joyce
The countdown begins.
In just 10 days, I’ll find out whether Today in the Hood, my no-budget, all-heart indie film, makes its way into the Sunset Film Festival. The tension is real, the excitement even more so, and in the meantime—I’m refreshing my email like it's a slot machine. Jackpot = Acceptance Letter.

This film is raw. It’s poetic. It's honest. It's part documentary, part dream sequence, and totally born from the streets I’ve walked—and the stories I’ve lived. It doesn’t just show life in the hood; it breathes it, questions it, flips it upside down, and hands it to you with a crooked grin and a cigarette butt.
And why the Sunset Film Festival? Because it’s one of the few platforms that recognizes voice, vision, and a little bit of madness as an artistic statement. They celebrate innovation, raw narratives, and films that weren’t built in a studio—they were built in lived experience. That’s me. That’s this.
What happens in 10 days?
Maybe a rejection. Maybe not. But no matter what happens, this film exists. It speaks. It resonates with those who’ve been told they’re “too much” or “not enough.”
And as an artist, sometimes all we need is for one person to believe in our voice. One jury. One spotlight. One screen.
In the meantime, if you haven’t watched the movie —please do. Share it. Like it. Leave a comment. This is the kind of support that keeps artists like me creating, despite the odds.
And hey, if I don’t make it into Sunset? I’ll submit to Sunrise. Then Moonlight. Then Starlight. Because this train isn’t stopping here.
