Art and About: Getting into Galleries

Posted by Dan Joyce on

Getting into galleries is a lot easier than you’d think. As an artist, sometimes the hardest part is taking that first step, but once you’re in, opportunities can snowball. Here are a few ways to get started:

One effective way, especially for students, is to hang out with the A students in your art class and ask if you can show with them. Believe it or not, several artist collectives form this way, and it creates fantastic networking opportunities. Working alongside other talented students not only sharpens your skills but also exposes you to their audiences, which can lead to further opportunities.

Another surefire approach is to attend art shows and openings regularly. Meeting people in person is powerful—show up, introduce yourself, and network. If the conversation allows, refer them to your website. Having a well-designed website that showcases a variety of your work is key—it acts as your digital portfolio, allowing potential clients and galleries to see what you’re about.

If you have a specific series in mind, creating a little video to showcase your art, set to music, can leave a lasting impression. Show it to people on an iPad or tablet when you're at events—it’s an engaging way to demonstrate your vision without taking up too much of their time. But remember, you’re attending someone else’s event, so don’t steal the spotlight; be respectful of the host.

Once you have a few successful shows under your belt, word will start spreading. Soon, you may find people coming to you for commissions, gallery shows, and even museum donations. That’s when the real challenge begins: keeping your work consistent and maintaining its quality. Always strive to create at your best.

So, get out there and immerse yourself in your local art scene. The connections you make could be the beginning of something amazing.
