Art and About: Draw Every Day

Posted by Dan Joyce on

If you’re going to master your craft in two-dimensional illustration or even nonrepresentational abstract art, there’s one golden rule I always tell young artists: draw every day. It’s not just advice; it’s a lifeline for creativity.

As an artist, I do this for my books and other projects, keeping my mind sharp and my creative juices flowing. It’s like going to the gym for your brain—each sketch, doodle, or stroke strengthens your artistic muscle, refining your skillset in ways that might not seem obvious at first but pay off over time.

Practice doesn’t just make perfect, it also keeps your mind flexible. It allows you to experiment freely, push boundaries, and discover new techniques. Whether you're working on something detailed or exploring abstract forms, the simple act of drawing every day builds confidence and discipline. You’ll see improvements in your line work, your understanding of light and form, and even in your overall artistic vision.

So, my advice is simple: if you want to grow as an artist, make drawing a daily habit. Keep a sketchbook on hand, draw what you see, what you imagine, and even what you dream. You'll find your style and voice through this regular exercise, and eventually, you'll master your craft. Just like any muscle, creativity needs a workout—and drawing every day is your best routine!
