So, here you are again, in one more rehab facility, with barely any sobriety to show for it. Not only that, but you're older now, and let's be honest—what do you have to show for all those years? Sure, you had that one five-year stretch of sobriety, but is that really impressive when you consider how many more years were wasted in the process?
And yet, you're still tooting your horn about AA, claiming it’s the magic solution for everyone, even for people like me who don’t want it anymore. Do you remember that dinner-table conflict? You screamed cuss words at the top of your lungs, spit flying from your lips, landing on my face. Was that your way of 'working the steps'? Hell no. No prompt admission of wrongdoing, no written resentments, and definitely no amends.
The guy who wants to be AA's mascot can't even do the program himself. Isn't it a little ironic? Honestly, how much of your life has been wasted chasing this idea that AA is the only way? Sure, AA works for some people. But for you? Look at the results.
Here’s my advice: Stop wasting your life in a program that barely works for you. You’ve got to find something else, something more fulfilling. Work on cars. Plant a garden. Write a book. Hell, I’ve written several, and creating art has brought me more joy and peace than any drink ever did.
The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over, expecting different results. Sound familiar? You clearly ignored that warning. So why not try something different? Find a passion that replaces the need for substances, and stop dedicating your life to something that isn’t working.
In other words: Get a life!
Having 30 years of outpatient therapy and 10 years sponsoring men in AA, I feel somewhat qualified to give this advice.
